Football & Volleyball Teams
Both squads posted wins over rival Akron last weekend, giving the Golden Flashes a 3.5-1.5 edge in the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge, which is based on a time-honored competition for the historic wooden Wagon Wheel Trophy awarded originally in 1945 to the winner of the annual Akron-Kent State football game. For the 2011-12 academic year, the PNC-sponsored rivalry will broaden the competition to include 15 NCAA varsity sports, with victories in each sport adding one point to the challenge standings. In keeping with tradition, the annual winner of the football contest will gain possession of the historic wooden Wagon Wheel trophy, while the school that accumulates the most total points in all varsity matchups for that academic year will receive an overall series trophy.
The volleyball team closed the 2011 season with a pair of Mid-American Conference victories, downing the Zips, 3-1, last Friday (Nov. 11) and posting a 3-0 Senior Day sweep of Buffalo the following day. The Golden Flashes closed out the season by winning four of their final five matches, including three straight wins to end the year on a high note and take fourth place in the MAC East.
The football team rolled to its third straight win in convincing fashion last Saturday (Nov. 12) with a 35-3 win over rival Akron at InfoCision Stadium. The victory allowed the Golden Flashes to retain the coveted Wagon Wheel Trophy for a second consecutive year. Kent State (4-6, 3-3 MAC) stays in contention in a tight MAC East Division race, trailing Ohio (4-2 MAC) by one game and Temple (4-3 MAC) by a half game with two games remaining for the Golden Flashes. Just two wins shy of becoming bowl eligible, Kent State returns to action at home next Saturday, Nov. 19 for Senior Day vs Eastern Michigan at 1:00 p.m. For ticket information contact the Kent State Ticket office at 330-672-2244.
