
T&F MAC Championships Day 1 Recap; Erickson takes Long Jump Title

AKRON, Ohio – The Kent State track field teams wrapped up day one of the Indoor MAC Championships hosted by the University of Akron Saturday, Feb. 26. Senior Roseanne Erickson was the highlight of the day for the Golden Flashes, capturing the women's long jump title with an indoor personal record (PR) of 6.24m (20' 5.75").

This is Erickson's second indoor MAC title in the long jump and her fifth MAC long jump title overall. Her mark of 20' 5.75" improves upon her previous indoor PR of 20' 3.00", as she remains second in the Kent State record book. Taking eighth in the women's long jump was sophomore Cayla Carey with a jump of 5.76m (18' 10.75").
In the men's long jump, sophomore Jonathan Grant took second place with a PR of 7.54m (24' 9.00"), moving him passed Mike Lowe (24' 7.75", 1996) for seventh all-time. In sixth place behind Grant was freshman Samory Fraga with a mark of 7.30m (23' 11.50").
Senior Jesse Oxley secured second place in the pole vault at a height of 5.2m (17' 0.75"), while junior Kyle Schlumbohm took fifth at 4.75m (15' 7.00"). Also taking fifth place on the day was junior Reggie Jagers in the weight throw, with a heave of 19.28m (63' 3.00").
In her first MAC Championship competition, sophomore Gabrielle Figueroa captured second place in the women's weight throw with a mark of 19.35m (63' 6.00"). Junior Rebecca Leppelmeier finished in ninth at 17.27m (56' 8.00").
The women's distance medley relay (DMR) team of Olivia Davis, Jorian Ordway, Kristen Bergmeyer, and Caroline Sauers finished in third place with a time of 11:36.77, moving them into fourth all-time in Kent State history. The men's DMR team of Samuel Allen, Danny Young, Jacob Swords, and Grant Onken finished with a time of 9:58.22, good enough for fourth place.
In the women's pentathlon, Golden Flashes took spots five through seven, with Chelsea Laury taking fifth, Aspen Gaita taking sixth, and Talia Falco taking seventh. Laury took second in the long jump with a PR jump of 5.51m (18' 1.00"). Gaita took third in the 60m hurdle portion of the pentathlon, with a personal record time of 8.81. Falco tied for the top spot in the high jump with a PR of 1.69m (5' 6.50").
After day one of men's heptathlon, Ryan Looser sits in sixth place (2,792), DJ Ohlson in seventh place (2,605), and Kyle Storm in ninth place (2,196).
The athletes qualifying for tomorrow's running event finals are: Wayne Gordon (60m and 200m), Jonathan Grant (60m), Brandon Harris (60m), William Barnes (60mH, 200m), Ryan Looser (60mH), Brian Smith (200m), and Danny Young (400m).
On the women's side, Taylor Farquhar (400m), Tyler Williams (400m), Jorian Ordway (400m) and Taylor Wickey (800m) all advanced to tomorrow's finals.
The action resumes from Stile Athletics Field House Saturday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. with the final three events of the men's heptathlon.
