
Gymnastics Sees Seven Named to Academic All-MAC Team

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Kent State gymnastics team had seven of its student-athletes named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday, March 30th.Â
A total of 51 gymnasts from the conference received the award, with Ball State collecting 10 selections, the most in the conference.
The seven Golden Flashes that garnered the Academic All-MAC honor are: Nicolle Eastman, Kayla Kosmerl, Milena Fabry, Samantha Gordon, Skyelee Lamano, Michaela Romito, and Brooke Timko.Â
Kent State finished the regular season undefeated (6-0) in Mid-American Conference match-ups, capturing the regular season MAC Championship. Head Coach Brice Biggin was voted MAC Coach of the Year for his efforts leading the Golden Flashes this season.Â
Sophomore Rachel Stypinski led the conference in regional qualifying score (RQS) on beam (9.870) and floor (9.890), as she was named MAC Gymnast of the Year and First Team All-MAC.Â
Junior Jordan Hardison earned Second Team All-MAC, finishing with the conference's second highest RQS on floor at 9.880.
At the MAC Championships, the Golden Flashes came away in 5th place with a team score of 195.325. On floor, the Flashes scored a 49.375, the highest team score of the tournament on any event. Hardison led the way for the Flashes with a 9.925, taking 2nd place, followed by Gordon and Lamano in a tie for 3rd place at 9.9. Romito added a 9.85 to tie for 15th followed by Kayla Kosmerl in a tie for 25th with a 9.8.
As a team, Kent State finished the year with an RQS of 195.595, qualifying the Golden Flashes to compete in a NCAA Regional competition. During the NCAA selection show on March 21st, the Golden Flashes were placed in the Iowa City Regional, which is slated for Saturday, April 2nd at the University of Iowa.Â
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.
