Men's Golf Finishes Fourth at Gopher Invitational

INDEPENDENCE, Minn. - The Kent State University men's golf team began the 2016-17 season with a strong showing at the Gopher Invitational, hosted by Minnesota, at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minnesota. The Golden Flashes finished fourth overall with a 20-over par score of 872 (286-290-296).
The performance marked the second straight top-5 finish at the annual event for Kent State. The score goes far in the team's goal of being top-25 ranked by the end of the fall, with a better finish then three of the four top-25 teams in the field.
Leading the pack for Kent State was Ian Holt, who finished with an overall score of 215 to finish tied for seventh. Holt had his best round of the tournament Sunday, shooting one-under par 70.
Chase Johnson, Josh Whalen and Gisli Sveinbergsson each finished in the top-30 in a tie for 27th with a final score of 220. Johnson shot a three-over par 74 Sunday, while Whalen finished his tournament with a five-over par 76. Sveinbergsson birdied the final hole of the tournament to finish his Sunday at 76.
Freshman Chris Doody shot six-over par Sunday, carding a final round score of 77. Doody wrapped up his first collegiate tournament with a score of 224, tying for 39th.
In the individual competition, sophomore Bjarki Petursson came away with a four-stroke victory over three rounds. He recorded a seven-under par score of 209 (70-70-69). Tyler McHugh also competed in the individual competition, finishing tied for 11th with a score of six-over par 222 (75-71-76).
No. 5 Oklahoma took the tournament win with a team score of 860, while Oklahoma's Grant Hirschman was the individual champion at 210.
The Golden Flashes will move on to the Maui Jim Invitational in Scottsdale, Arizona, beginning Sept. 24.
