KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University men's golf team had its best round in program history Friday, leading after round one of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Arizona with a 20-under par 264.
The 264 score is a new school record for a round, far surpassing the previous best mark of 271. The record was originally set in 2003 and last reached at the MAC Championship in 2009.
The Golden Flashes had two golfers shoot 65 or lower in the same round for the first time in school history. That pack was led by Josh Whalen, whose 64 (-7) Friday places him first overall. He started his round with a birdie on hole two and an eagle on the par-4 third hole. On the back nine, Whalen recorded four birdies. Whalen is now the fourth golfer in program history to shoot a 64 or better.
Tied for second at six-under par 65 is Ian Holt. Like Whalen, Holt had four birdies on the back nine to wrap up a phenomenal round. It is just the 22nd individual round of 65 or better.
Wrapping up Golden Flashes in the top-10 was Chase Johnson in a tie for ninth. Johnson shot four-under par at 67. Johnson notched five birdies Friday, two within the first three holes. Coming off a MAC Golfer of the Week performance, Bjarki Petursson finished in a tie for 15th. He shot a three-under par 68 to log the team's fourth score.
Fifth among Golden Flashes in a tie for 51st was Gisli Sveinbergsson, finishing with a one-over par score of 72. Competing individually, Kent State's Tyler McHugh shot a four-over par 75 to tie for 76th.
The Golden Flashes lead a field of four nationally ranked teams and have a four-stroke lead over second place Baylor. Check back with KentStateSports.com for updates after the upcoming rounds.
