
Track and Field Prepped for Friday’s Akron-Kent State Dual

Kent State's men's and women's track and field programs are set to renew their spirited rivalries with Akron Friday night, as they travel to Stile Athletics Field House to take on the Zips in the annual Akron-Kent State Dual. The dual is to begin at 6:30 p.m. with the men's pole vault.

The Golden Flashes will set out Friday looking to avenge last year's Akron-Kent State dual which ended with the Zips defeating Kent State on the men's and women's sides. In last year's Akron Dual, Jonathan Grant won the men's 60m dash with a personal-time of 6.79 seconds, the eighth-fastest time in school history. On the women's side, Morgan Estes was victorious in the women's pole vault, clearing a height of 13' 2.5" to win the event.
LAST TIME OUT
Kent State last competed in the Doug Raymond Invitational this past Saturday, which the Golden Flashes hosted at the Kent State Field House. The men's team defeated Youngstown State in dual meet 83-59, while the women's team defeated Bowling Green (93-51), Duquesne (100.5-46.5), Ohio (102-44) and Youngstown State (93.5-53.5).
Golden Flashes dominated the men's field events with Christian Champen (pole vault), Samory Fraga (long jump), Reggie Jagers III (weight throw), David Paliscak (shot put) and Abdul-Nasser Seidu (triple jump) claiming victories in their respective events. On the track, Brandon Avers (mile), Clark Bookman (3,000m), Andrew O'Leary (800m) and Matt Tobin (200m) were victorious in their events.
On the women's side Mi'Angel Daniels (200m), Jorian Ordway (400m), Swann Phelippeau (mile), Britni Phillips (triple jump) and Sam Tollerud (pole vault) won their respective events to lead Kent State to its four dual meet wins. Lauren Burnett returned to action for the first time since 2015, taking second in the 800m with a time of 2:17.87. Also taking home second place finishes was Daniels (60m hurdles), Maria Horrigan (pole vault), Caroline Sauers (mile) and the 4x400m relay team of Daniels, Kayla Seymour, Ashley Grazen and Olivia Gaus.
RANKING THE GOLDEN FLASHES
• Tollerud's season-best mark in the pole vault of 13' 5.25" ranks ninth in the nation and first in the Mid-American Conference.
• Chelsea Laury's personal-record point total in the pentathlon of 3,545 points is the 16th-highest total in the country and first in the conference.
• Ordway holds the third fastest 400m time in the conference so far this season at 56.33.
• After her first competition of the season, Britni Phillips has fifth-longest triple jump in the MAC at 38' 2".
• Kent State's heptathlon competitors: TJ Lawson (5,512 points), Ryan Looser (5,287 points) and Mitchell Kubicki (4,853 points), hold the top-three spots in the conference and rank fourth, ninth and 19th, respectively, in the nation.
• Jagers' mark in the weight throw of 65' 11.5" leads the MAC and ranks 21st in the nation.
• Fraga's personal-record long jump of 24' 7" puts him second in the conference and 16th in the country.
• With a personal-record time of 21.67 in the 200m, Tobin owns the top spot in the MAC and ranks 48th nationally.
UP NEXT
Next weekend the Golden Flashes will head to Ypsilanti, Mich. to compete in the Eastern Michigan Triangular on Saturday, Jan. 28. Kent State will use the EMU Triangular as extra preparation for this season's indoor MAC Championships which will be hosted by the Eagles Feb. 24-25. Kent State has not competed at EMU's Bowen Fieldhouse since 2013, the last time the Eagles hosted the MAC Championships.
