Thomas Wins Shot Put on Final Day of SPIRE Invitational

GENEVA, Ohio – Kent State's Danniel Thomas led the way for the Golden Flashes at the SPIRE Division I Invitational Saturday, winning the shot put with a mark of 17.24m (56' 6.75").
Thomas' mark of 56' 6.75" gave her the women's shot put title by over four feet in a field filled competitors from MAC and Big Ten Conference. Rebecca Leppelmeier secured a top-10 finish in the shot put, placing ninth with a season-best mark of 14.31m (46' 11.5"). Finishing 14th overall was Ada Nicholson-Burley at a distance of 13.45m (44' 1.5").
AJ Stevens had the best finish of the day for the men's team, taking second in the triple jump with a leap of 15.31m (50' 2.75"). Abdul-Nasser Seidu captured seventh in the triple jump and eighth in the high jump with marks of 14.11m (46' 3.5") and 1.96m (6' 5"), respectively. DJ Ohlson needed three attempts to clear the 1.96m bar in the high, finishing ninth behind Seidu who needed two attempts.
Maria Horrigan posted a career-best mark in the pole vault of 3.97m (13' 0.25") to finish third overall and move from seventh to sixth in the Kent State record book. Ally Thompson finished tied for 12th place in the pole vault, jumping 3.67m (12' 0.5").
In the men's pole vault, Christian Champen came away tied for third at a height of 5.18m (17' 0"). Kyle Schlumbohm recorded a PR of 4.88m (16' 0") to finish seventh, followed by Mitch Kubicki in 19th at 4.28m (14' 0.5").
Mi'Angel Daniels came away with a top-five finish in the women's 60m hurdles as she ran 8.59 in the prelims and the finals to finish fourth overall. On the men's side, Marek Wolski took sixth at 8.32, after setting a PR of 8.29 in the prelims. Richard Dahome also set a PR in the prelims running 8.18, but false started in the finals. Daniels also ran in the women's 60m dash, finishing 13th with a PR of 7.77.
Swann Phelippeau improved her personal-best in the mile, logging a time of 4:57.19 to finish 17th overall. Olivia Davis took 22nd with a time of 5:00.81, followed by Jaimie Adams in 32nd with a PR 5:07.52.
Matthew Tobin (47.86) finished seventh in the men's 400m, while Jorian Ordway (56.32) finished 11th in the women's 400m.
David Paliscak secured an eighth place finish in the men's shot put with a mark of 17.16m (56' 3.75"), followed by Walter Petzel (16.05m, 52' 8") in 15th and Trevor Detillion (15.26m, 50' 0.75") in 20th.
In the 800m run, Lauren Burnett (2:12.04) was Kent State's top-finisher, taking 19th. Hannah Fleck came away in 25th place at 2:12.62, followed Olivia Gaus in 32nd at 2:13.86.
Grant Onken (4:19.40) and Josh Gogan (4:23.34) ran in the men's mile, taking 18th and 24th, respectively, while Sam Goodman took 29th in the 3,000m at 8:41.21.
The Golden Flashes return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 as they host the Kent State Tune Up, the last meet before the Indoor MAC Championships.
