CLEVELAND, Ohio – Senior Maddy Grimm has been named Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday (March 30) afternoon.
Grimm homered twice and had a team-high seven RBIs to lead Kent State to a series win at Eastern Michigan on the opening weekend of MAC play. She also scored five runs, drew seven walks and was hit by a pitch. After hitting a two-run shot in the first game of Friday's doubleheader and launching a grand slam in her second trip to the plate of the night cap, the Eagles decided the best way to stop Grimm from doing damage with her bat was not letting take a swing. Grimm walked in her final six plate appearances of the series with five being of the intentional variety.
The slugger impressed in the Golden Flashes' 5-3 loss at No. 9 Alabama on Tuesday. Facing All-American Sydney Littlejohn, Grimm roped a RBI single to right field in the first inning and crushed a no-doubter off the videoboard in left field to tie the game in the third before being intentionally walked to leadoff the sixth.
Grimm now ranks second in MAC history in home runs (58) and slugging percentage (.759), third in RBIs (170), sixth in runs scored (143) and seventh in walks (98).
Kent State (10-16) continues its 9-game, 10-day Spring Break trip with a doubleheader at Evansville Wednesday afternoon before heading to Central Michigan for the second weekend of conference play.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives. Kent State leads all MAC schools with 13 winners of the award this year.
