WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 12 Kent State University men's golf team won its third tournament of the spring season, taking the title at the Boilermaker Invitational with a score of 1-over par 865 (285-296-284).
After a tough first day, several teams made a push for Kent State's top spot in round three. However, the Golden Flashes held off the competition by shooting 1-under par over the final 18 holes. The Flashes finished five strokes ahead of hosts Purdue, and at least nine strokes ahead of the rest of the field.
"We had to play hard down the stretch," noted head coach Herb Page. "It was very close today and the guys had to play with a lot of courage. This is an individual sport, but you win with five great players. We've won by 20 strokes and we've won close, but every win gives you confidence. Of course we have some things we have to work on, but that's golf."
Individually, the race for the top spot was tight, but up for grabs Sunday between two Flashes. Bjarki Petursson and Josh Whalen finished alone in the top-2, with Petursson finishing with his second tournament title this season. He finished the tournament with a score of 4-under par 212, ending the tournament with a score of 70 Sunday. Whalen was close to winning his second tournament in the last three outings, shooting a 4-under 68 in round three. That brought his score to 3-under par 213.
Kent State won with four scorers in the top-25. Gisli Sveinbergsson finished at 3-over par 219, good for a tie for 13th. He shot a 1-over par 73 Sunday, with four birdies. Defending MAC Golfer of the Year Chase Johnson finished in a tie for 23rd at 5-over par 221. He carded a score of 1-over par 73 Sunday as well.
Ian Holt was fifth among Flashes and took a share of 63rd place at 15-over par 231. He had his best round of the tournament Sunday with a 75. Spencer Dobbs competed as an individual this weekend and ended in a tie for 78th at 23-over par 239. He also had his best round Sunday, with a score of 77.
Kent State will wrap up the regular season at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, hosted by Ohio State April 22-23.
