COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12 Kent State University women's golf team claimed third place at the Lady Buckeye Invitational Sunday with a score of 38-over par 902 (296-301-305).
Kent State finished out the tournament through high winds but still managed to move up into the top-3. Tying with hosts Ohio State, the Golden Flashes beat all but two teams by at least eight strokes. Michigan State won the tournament at 889.
"Playing the Scarlet Course is always a great test of golf, especially with the windy conditions the last two days," said head coach Greg Robertson. "It exposes any weaknesses that players have in their golf games. Â I think we learned quite a bit from the tournament as we head into the postseason. Â We have a short week for the players to touch up on a few things and get prepared for the MAC Championship starting Friday. Â With the tournament being held so close to campus at Silver Lake, we hope to get as much support as we can from the Kent State fans from around the area."
With seven Flashes in the field, freshmen Pimnipa Panthong and Karoline Stormo both finished at the top of the pack. The duo tied for 12th at 8-over par 224. Stormo had the best round on the team at 1-over par 73 to move into the top 15, while Panthong finished the weekend with a 77. Senior Wad Phaewchimplee was a stroke behind them in 15th place. Phaewchimplee matched Panthong's score of 77 Sunday.
Kelly and Kasey Nielsen rounded out Kent State's top five. Kelly shot a 78 in round three to finish tied for 33rd at 18-over par 234. Kasey finished tied for 43rd with a score of 21-over par 237. She carded a score of 85 Sunday.
Michaela Finn wrapped up the Kent State lineup in a tie for 47th, finishing the tournament 24-over par at 240. She shot an 80 on Sunday. Competing as an individual, freshman Marissa Kirkwood claimed 70th place with a score of 33-over par 249. She shot an 85 in round three, improving by three strokes from the previous day.
The Flashes finished the regular season with eight top-3 finishes in 2016-17. The team moves on to the 2017 MAC Championship, in which they will host and compete for a 19th straight title.
