
Petursson Shines on Day Two of NCAA National Championship

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The No. 11 Kent State University men's golf team is through day two of the 2017 NCAA National Championship and sophomore Bjarki Petursson is making a run at the individual title.
On Saturday, the Flashes finished the last half of round one and played all of round two. In that time, Petursson has broken out as one of the top performers in the field. He will enter round three tied for second at 7-under par 137. The sophomore has been consistent from start to finish, posting a 68 in round one and a 69 in round two.
In the second round, Petursson earned an eagle on the second hole and went 14 holes without a bogey. After his first bogey of the round on 17, Petursson birdied the final hole. Petursson is one stroke off Scottie Scheffler of Texas at 8-under par.
As a team, Kent State is currently tied for 19th at 6-over par 582. Kent State shot 1-over par in round one and 5-over par in the second round. In order to advance to Monday as a team, the Flashes will have to move into the top-15, of which they are four strokes behind. In the event Kent State does not advance, Petursson will move on if he ends round three in the top-9.
Behind Petursson, Josh Whalen holds a 36-hole score of 6-over par 150. He registered back-to-back scores of 75, tying for 108th overall. One stroke back from Whalen is MAC Player of the Year Ian Holt. He shot a 76 in round one and a 75 in round two, moving into a tie for 116th place. He birdied three of his last four holes Saturday.
Chase Johnson is 10-over par at 154 through two rounds. Johnson shined in round one, posting a 70, and followed with an 84 in round two. He is currently tied for 139th. Finally, Gisli Sveinbergsson holds a score of 12-over par 156, good for a tie for 147th place. After carding an 82 in round one, he improved to 74 in round two.
