CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Kent State softball program continues to succeed at a high level both on the field and in the classroom, as the 2017 Mid-American Conference Tournament champions had 10 student-athletes earn Academic All-MAC honors, the conference office announced on Wednesday (May 31).
Eight of the Golden Flashes' honorees started one or more games during NCAA Regional play in Waco, Texas last week, and all 11 made at least 20 starts during the season.
Seniors Maddy Grimm and Janel Hayes claimed academic all-conference honors for the third consecutive year. Grimm was previously recognized for her combined performances athletically and in the classroom by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as an Academic All-District™ selection.
Senior Paige McCrary and juniors Emily Dobbin, Allie Luther and Vanessa Scoarste all received academic honors for the second time.
Senior Nicole Teefy, junior Holly Speers and sophomores Hunter Brancifort and Jen Cader are first-time honorees.
During the spring semester, the Golden Flashes recorded an outstanding 3.630 team GPA. Six student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.00 and five additional student-athletes earned a 3.900 or better.
The Academic All-MAC Team honors student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
