KENT, Ohio – The No. 6 Kent State University women's golf team is set to compete in the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship Sept. 18-19 at the Cherokee Country Club (par 71, 5,897 / 5,840 yards) in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The tournament begins with the first two rounds Monday at 8:30 a.m. in a shotgun start. The final round will take place Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Kent State has been a staple in the Tennessee hosted tournament and adds to a daunting field. The Flashes will take on: BYU, Coastal Carolina, Eastern Kentucky, ETSU, Illinois, Iowa, No. 21 Tennessee, Kentucky, Maryland, No. 16 Missouri, No. 7 NC State, SMU, UTSA and No. 18 Wake Forest.
Roughly half of the field ranks in the latest Golfweek top-50 rankings, but the Golden Flashes are the highest ranked team in the field. The Flashes are coming off a fourth-place finish at the Jim West Challenge, giving them a record of 6-3 against the national top-50. Pimnipa Panthong led the Flashes with a top-10 finish, earning Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week honors.
Kent State will look to maintain their top-10 ranking at a tournament they have had success. The Flashes are the tournament record holders for a 54-hole low score of 847, set back in 2015. Michaela Finn and Kelly Nielsen both participated in that tournament and will be featured this week.
Last year, Kent State finished second at three-over par 855 (286-283-286). Most notably, the tournament was the collegiate debut of All-American Panthong, who won the tournament and set a then school record for a 54-hole low score at 205. She would go on the break that record later in the season. Her 67 and 68 to start the tournament is still the best 36 hole mark ever recorded at Kent State.
