
Men's Golf in Lead at Maui Jim Intercollegiate

CAREFREE, Ariz. – The No. 20 Kent State University men's golf team is in the lead after round one of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate.
Kent State finished its first 18 holes at a 7-under par score of 281. The Golden Flashes are the only team in the tournament that finished the day under par Friday, giving them an eight stroke lead on Arizona State and Minnesota. As a team, Kent State registered 25 birdies and an eagle, with three scorers under par.
Three Flashes enter round two in the top-5, led by Gisli Sveinbergsson in the overall lead. The junior MAC Champion registered a 4-under par score of 68 Friday, one stroke off his career-best mark. He tacked on nine birdies to take a one-stroke lead for the tournament.
Tying for third are Bjarki Petursson and Chris Doody at 2-under par 70. Both returners birdied two of the last three holes on the course to stay within two strokes of Sveinbergsson. In a tie for 20th is Ian Holt, who shot 1-over par 73. Holt ended strong, recording his team's only eagle to finish the round.
Chase Johnson completes the lineup for Kent State at 5-over par 77, placing him in a tie for 44th. Competing as an individual, freshman Josh Gilkison began his tournament with a first round score of 6-over par 78. He enters Saturday's round in a tie for 51st place.
