CLEVELAND, Ohio – Kent State junior Alexa Golden has been named Mid-American Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented weekly to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
Kent State has earned a conference-best six scholar-athlete awards for the 2017-18 academic year. Teammate Jordan Korinek received the award for the third time in her career on Nov. 23.
Golden graduated magna cum laude in December, earning a baccalaureate degree in criminal justice in just 2.5 years. She is currently enrolled in Kent State's sport and recreation management graduate program.
In the Golden Flashes' 67-60 victory Saturday at Eastern Michigan, Golden sank four crucial free throws in the final 15 seconds and nearly notched her first collegiate double-double by matching her career-high with 10 rebounds to go with nine points, five assists and one steal. The win was Kent State's first in a conference opener since 2011, as they improved to 5-1 on the road this season.
On the season, Golden is averaging career-bests of 9.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. She leads the Flashes in steals (22), offensive rebounds (27), three-point shooting (.405) and free throw shooting (.803).
