FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The No. 29 Kent State men's golf team holds second place after round three of the 2018 Mid-American Conference Championship, at Sycamore Hills Golf Course.
With temperatures cold temperatures and winds gusting up around 20 miles per hour for much of the action, the Flashes fired a team round of 301 (+13). At 900 (+36) through 54 holes, Kent State trails the leader, Ball State by 10-shots. Akron (+50) and Miami (+50) are tied for third with one round to play.
" Again, a very frustrating day today, we are just not playing very good golf," said head coach Herb Page. "Our players got a decent start, but we are hitting too many double and triple bogeys. We play our way back in, but hit big numbers to fall behind. We have to play Kent State golf tomorrow and I really think these guys can still win this thing."
Ian Holt, who sits in a tie for fifth place, jumped six spots up the leaderboard improving from his first and second round with carding an even-par 72 score. Holt birdied six times, two of which were back-to-back on holes 15 and 16. The senior leads the tournament in par-4 scoring at 2-over par.
Not far behind Holt in the top-10 is Bjarki Petursson in a tie for seventh place. Petursson finished the day at 77 (+5) while leading the tournament with 12 birdies total. Chase Johnson sits in the top-15 after mirroring his second round score of 4-over 76. Sitting at 6-over on the 17th hole, Johnson sunk back-to-back birdies that added to his six total.
Another Flash in the top-15 is Gisli Sveinbergsson who sits in a tie for 14th. Sveinbergsson carded a 76 (+3) for the third round and sits at 13-over heading into the final round of golf.
Rounding out the Flashes' lineup is Josh Gilkison in a tie for 18th. Gilkison finished the day at 17-over 233 after firing a third round score of 83.
The final round of the MAC Championships is set for Sunday. The action begins at 9:30 a.m. with the Flashes teeing off at 10:20 a.m. Live results are available at golfstat.com.
