Flashes Welcome 18 Members to 2011-12 Squad
After signing six wrestlers to national letters of intent last fall, The Kent State wrestling team recently announced the addition of 13 more newcomers, bringing its incoming class to 18 and its total roster to 39. The Golden Flashes brought in more out-of-state recruits this season than any other year, including seven from Pennsylvania and one from West Virginia.

40 Years After His Retirement, Begala's Impact Still Felt
For over 40 years, Joe Begala’s presence at Kent State’s Memorial Gymnasium created a chorus of sound that rang throughout the hallways. Bill Herbert, who wrestled for Begala from 1965-67 and coached under him from 1968-71, said that Begala continues to impact his life decades later.

Flashes Selected to Compete in National Dual Championships
Kent State was recently selected as one of 24 teams to compete in the 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen Division I National Dual Meet Championships that will feature four regional locations and a culminating championship for the final four teams that advance out of each region. On Feb. 11, the Golden Flashes will head to New Jeresey for their regional, which will include Minnesota, Missouri, Michigan, Cal Poly and host Rutgers.

One day after Dustin Kilgore earned a spot on the United States World Team, former Kent State standout Danny Mitcheff did the same on Saturday with a third place finish during the World Team Trials at the Cox Convention Center.

Kent State’s Dustin Kilgore reached another milestone in his wrestling career Friday, earning a true third place at the U.S. World Team Trials. Competing at 96KG (211.5 lbs), well above his NCAA weight class, Kilgore went 4-1 on the day and reached the finals of the challenge tournament.

Kent State junior 165-pounder Ross Tice (Brookfield, Ohio/Brookfield) was recently named to the 2011 National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team. An integrated mathematics major, Tice carries a 3.28 grade point average.

Kilgore Earns Wild Card Bid to World Team Trials
On Thursday, Kent State’s Dustin Kilgore was awarded a wild card bid to the 2011 World Team Trials to be held June 10-11 in Oklahoma City. Kilgore was one of two wrestlers in the 96KG (211.5 lbs) weight class to earn a wild card.

Kent State junior Dustin Kilgore was named Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Year Tuesday by the league’s head coaches. On March 19, Kilgore became the first MAC wrestler since 1999 to win an NCAA title.

Tice and Cathell Earn NCAA At-Large Bids as Brackets Are Unveiled
Kent State junior Ross Tice (165) and senior Matt Cathell (157) were awarded at-large bids to the 2011 NCAA Championships Wednesday night when the 33-men brackets were released. Tice and Cathell join Nic Bedelyon (125), Tyler Small (133), Dustin Kilgore (197) and Brendan Barlow (285) as KSU's record-tying six representatives at the national tournament.

Kilgore and Bedelyon Lead Flashes as Team Finishes a Close Second
Junior Dustin Kilgore (197) became the ninth wrestler in Kent State history to become a three-time Mid-American Conference champion Sunday as the Golden Flashes finished second in the team standings at Northern Illinois’ Convocation Center. KSU ended the weekend with 73.5 points, just behind Central Michigan’s winning mark of 79. Buffalo also kept things intersting with 69.5 points.

MAC Championships Await Flashes with 18 NCAA Bids on the Line in DeKalb
In search of its first conference tournament title since 1990, No. 17 Kent State heads to DeKalb, Ill. this weekend for the Mid-American Conference Championships. Northern Illinois’ Convocation Center will host the two-day event Saturday and Sunday (March 5-6), where 18 automatic qualifying spots to the NCAA Championships will be awarded. The Golden Flashes, Central Michigan and Ohio all finished in a three-way tie for the MAC regular season crown with conference marks of 4-1. KSU has four wrestlers (Nic Bedelyon, Matt Cathell, Dustin Kilgore, Brendan Barlow) ranked in the Top 15 of a national poll and four Flashes (Casey Newburg, Bedelyon, Cathell, Kilgore) are ranked in the No. 1 spot in the MAC Coaches Poll.

Flashes Settle for MAC Three-Way Tie in Loss at Central Michigan
Kent State, Central Michigan and Ohio will share the 2011 MAC regular season title following the Chippewas 20-14 victory over the Golden Flashes Sunday at McGuirk Arena. In the final match, a takedown by CMU’s Jarod Trice with five seconds remaining secured the Chippewas sixth win of the day with a 3-1 decision.

Kent State completed a dominant conference weekend performance Sunday with a 30-3 victory at Eastern Michigan. The No. 15 Golden Flashes (14-5, 4-0 MAC) took 9-of-10 matches at Bowen Field House, clinching at least a share of the MAC regular season title. Junior Dustin Kilgore (197) moved into second place among KSU’s career leaders, pinning his opponent in just 17 seconds.

Kent State wrestling fans know him as Nick Nemeth (1999-2003), but to much of the world he is WWE superstar Dolph Ziggler, and Friday night (Feb. 11) he makes his return to the M.A.C. Center. The three-time Mid-American Conference champion and former career win leader will serve as an honorary captain for his alma mater when it takes on rival Ohio.

Buffalo captured the first three matches of the day, before junior Ross Tice (165) got a Kent State rally started in a 19-13 victory over the Bulls Sunday afternoon at Alumni Arena. Tice’s 4-2 win over John-Martin Cannon was the first of six straight victories for the Golden Flashes (12-5, 2-0 MAC), which included overtime triumphs at 184 and heavyweight.

After a respectable showing against No. 2 Penn State, the Kent State wrestling team topped Lehigh 18-16 for third place Saturday at the Virginia Duals inside the Hampton Coliseum. The Golden Flashes (7-5) won four matches in a 27-15 semifinal loss to the Nittany Lions and got bonus points from Matt Cathell and Ross Tice to make the difference in a split of 10 matches against the Mountain Hawks.

Kent State looks to repeat as team champions at the Body Bar Invitational Saturday (Nov. 20) in Ithaca, N.Y. The Golden Flashes, No. 18 according InterMat’s tournament rankings, will be one of 11 teams in a field that includes No. 1 Cornell and No. 6 Central Michigan. Both duals began at heavyweight and a surprise third period pin by Kyle Simonson against junior Brendan Barlow gave the Cyclones the quick break they were looking for.

The Kent State wrestling team embarks on its 2010-11 season this weekend in Salem, Va. Saturday, the Golden Flashes face Chattanooga (2 p.m.) and perennial power Iowa State (4 p.m.) in dual meets. On Sunday, KSU returns to the Salem Civic Center for the Hokie Open. The Kent State University wrestling team will host the Golden Flash Classic Sunday at the M.A.C. Center. The youth tournament is open to ages 5 - 18 and all participants will be guaranteed at least three matches.

Matt Hill will return to the Kent State wrestling staff for the 2010-11 season as a full-time assistant coach. A three-time NCAA qualifier at Edinboro, Hill served as a graduate assistant at KSU from 2007-09.

Boasting a lineup loaded with returning starters and national qualifiers, Kent State will be tested early and often throughout the 2010-11 season. The Golden Flashes’ schedule, which begins with a Nov. 6 dual against Iowa State, was released Monday.

Boardwine Named Head Coach at Campbell University
Former Kent State standout Joe Boardwine was named head wrestling coach at Campbell University Thursday. A two-year captain with the Golden Flashes, Boardwine has been regarded as one of the top high school wrestling coaches in the state of Ohio.
