Flashes Welcome 18 Members to 2011-12 Squad
After signing six wrestlers to national letters of intent last fall, The Kent State wrestling team recently announced the addition of 13 more newcomers, bringing its incoming class to 18 and its total roster to 39. The Golden Flashes brought in more out-of-state recruits this season than any other year, including seven from Pennsylvania and one from West Virginia.

40 Years After His Retirement, Begala's Impact Still Felt
For over 40 years, Joe Begala’s presence at Kent State’s Memorial Gymnasium created a chorus of sound that rang throughout the hallways. Bill Herbert, who wrestled for Begala from 1965-67 and coached under him from 1968-71, said that Begala continues to impact his life decades later.

Flashes Selected to Compete in National Dual Championships
Kent State was recently selected as one of 24 teams to compete in the 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen Division I National Dual Meet Championships that will feature four regional locations and a culminating championship for the final four teams that advance out of each region. On Feb. 11, the Golden Flashes will head to New Jeresey for their regional, which will include Minnesota, Missouri, Michigan, Cal Poly and host Rutgers.

Kent State’s Dustin Kilgore reached another milestone in his wrestling career Friday, earning a true third place at the U.S. World Team Trials. Competing at 96KG (211.5 lbs), well above his NCAA weight class, Kilgore went 4-1 on the day and reached the finals of the challenge tournament.

Junior Dustin Kilgore (197) became the ninth wrestler in Kent State history to become a three-time Mid-American Conference champion Sunday as the Golden Flashes finished second in the team standings at Northern Illinois’ Convocation Center. KSU ended the weekend with 73.5 points, just behind Central Michigan’s winning mark of 79. Buffalo also kept things intersting with 69.5 points.

MAC Championships Await Flashes with 18 NCAA Bids on the Line in DeKalb
In search of its first conference tournament title since 1990, No. 17 Kent State heads to DeKalb, Ill. this weekend for the Mid-American Conference Championships. Northern Illinois’ Convocation Center will host the two-day event Saturday and Sunday (March 5-6), where 18 automatic qualifying spots to the NCAA Championships will be awarded. The Golden Flashes, Central Michigan and Ohio all finished in a three-way tie for the MAC regular season crown with conference marks of 4-1. Juniors Nic Bedelyon and Dustin Kilgore were each ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes in the Mid-American Conference Preseason Coaches Poll released Friday. Kent State’s two returning All-Americans were also ranked in the Top five of The Open Mat’s National Preseason Poll.

Golden Flash Classic to be Held Sunday
The Kent State University wrestling team will host the Golden Flash Classic Sunday at the M.A.C. Center. The youth tournament is open to ages 5 - 18 and all participants will be guaranteed at least three matches.

Matt Hill will return to the Kent State wrestling staff for the 2010-11 season as a full-time assistant coach. A three-time NCAA qualifier at Edinboro, Hill served as a graduate assistant at KSU from 2007-09.

Boasting a lineup loaded with returning starters and national qualifiers, Kent State will be tested early and often throughout the 2010-11 season. The Golden Flashes’ schedule, which begins with a Nov. 6 dual against Iowa State, was released Monday.

Boardwine Named Head Coach at Campbell University
Former Kent State standout Joe Boardwine was named head wrestling coach at Campbell University Thursday. A two-year captain with the Golden Flashes, Boardwine has been regarded as one of the top high school wrestling coaches in the state of Ohio.
