Kent State junior Mallie Shuster was named to the 2012 National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic Team Tuesday. Shuster met the qualifying combination of carrying 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and earning a spot in the 157-pound bracket of the NCAA Championships.

Bedelyon will face No. 1 Matt McDonough (Iowa) in the semifinals at 7 p.m Eastern on ESPNU. McDonough was a 2010 national champion and the runner-up in 2011. He is 37-1 on the year, while Bedelyon is 32-4.

Coming off a 4-0 weekend and a team championship at the Virginia Duals, No. 16 Kent State (8-4, 1-0 MAC) jumps back into conference competition Friday against rival Ohio at the Convocation Center in Athens. Friday marks the first of four conference duals over the next three weekends for the Golden Flashes. Since the 2005-06 season, Kent State has not dropped a MAC dual against any team but Central Michigan, going 24-0-1 against the combination of Northern Illinois, Buffalo, Ohio and Eastern Michigan.

Flashes Shock Missouri 18-14 to Win Virginia Duals Championship
Kent State avenged an earlier season loss against No. 9 Missouri to complete a 4-0 weekend and win the Virginia Duals championship Saturday inside the Hampton Coliseum. In need of final match victories from senior Brendan Barlow in both the semifinal and final round, the Golden Flashes topped Old Dominion 21-16 and Missouri 18-14. The Flashes’ title is their first in 11 program trips to the event.

Seniors Nic Bedelyon and Brendan Barlow each joined the Flashes’ 100-victory club with a pair of wins on Wednesday. Bedelyon got the day started with a 13-5 major decision over No. 19 Nick Smith of Northern Illinois, while Barlow put an exclamation point on the Flashes’ afternoon with a first period pin of Cleveland State’s Rock Davis.

Bedelyon was the first Kent State wrestler to ever participate in the 46th annual NWCA All-Star Classic Monday night in Tempe, Arizona, where he defeated No. 3 Jarrod Patterson of Oklahoma 7-3. On Saturday, Bedelyon went 4-0 with two first period pins, winning the Body Bar Invitational. In his championship match, he topped No. 7 Frank Perrelli of Cornell.

Flashes Welcome 18 Members to 2011-12 Squad
After signing six wrestlers to national letters of intent last fall, The Kent State wrestling team recently announced the addition of 13 more newcomers, bringing its incoming class to 18 and its total roster to 39. The Golden Flashes brought in more out-of-state recruits this season than any other year, including seven from Pennsylvania and one from West Virginia.

Wednesday and Thursday.

Kent State was recently selected as one of 24 teams to compete in the 2012 NWCA/Cliff Keen Division I National Dual Meet Championships that will feature four regional locations and a culminating championship for the final four teams that advance out of each region. On Feb. 11, the Golden Flashes will head to New Jeresey for their regional, which will include Minnesota, Missouri, Michigan, Cal Poly and host Rutgers.
