Former Flash tosses six shutout innings for Padres
MONTERREY, MEXICO – Kent State's former ace Eric Lauer worked six superb shutout innings and Eric Hosmer broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer as the San Diego Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at Estadio de Beisbol.
Making his third big-league start, the lefty struck out five in his six-inning performance, scattering seven hits and walking only one. The 22-year old from Lorain County came up big for his big-league club – whose bullpen was forced to throw nearly 11 innings in the first two games of the series. Lauer made clutch pitches all day – especially with men on base.
"You just know you have to bear down in certain points and make pitches," he said. "In those moments, you have to trust in your teammates a little more, because if you try to be too fine, you're going to end up walking guys, getting into worse situations."
In 2016, Lauer won 10 games and finished with a NCAA-best 0.69 ERA. He threw a no-hitter on May 13 and struck out 125 in 104 innings for a Kent State team which finished 44-14. His first career MLB win comes less than two years since his final start at KSU.
