CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced on Tuesday that Alyssa Guns has been named the conference's specialist of the week for her performance on the beam and floor in Sunday's dual meet win over Western Michigan.
The award marks the second time Guns has earned the honor this season and the fifth time of her four-year career. She also claimed the award following the Flashes' season-opening tri-meet win over Fisk and Wilberforce.
After an up-and-down opening two rotations, the Flashes found themselves trailing Western Michigan in the overall team score. Needing a strong final two rotations, Guns answered the call. The senior made her first appearance of the day on the beam, where a score of 9.875 enabled her to tie for first in the event.
Guns was the anchor of the Flashes' lineup for the team's final rotation on the floor. She concluded the meet in spectacular fashion, putting together a near-flawless routine to earn a 9.900 on the floor, a season-high across all events for Kent State, to win her second event of the meet and will the Flashes to a team victory.
Tuesday marks the third time a Kent State gymnast has claimed the MAC Specialist of the Week award. In addition to Guns' two honors, Heidi Schultz also earned the award for her performance on bars and beam in mid-January.
Guns and Kent State return to action on Friday, February 7, as they hit the road to face Northern Illinois in a dual meet, set to begin at 8 p.m. EST.
