No. 12 Men's Golf Holds 16 Stroke Lead at MAC Championship

NASHPORT, Ohio – The No. 12 Kent State University men's golf team will enter the final round of the 2017 MAC Championship leading the field by 16 strokes.
Competing at the Virtues Golf Club, Kent State is currently at 4-under par 860 (287-288-285). The Golden Flashes maintained their consistent play and had their best round of the tournament Saturday after a lengthy weather delay. Ball State is currently in second place at 12-over par. If the Flashes shoot better than a 4-over par 292 on Sunday, they will break their own record for team score in a four-round MAC Tournament.
While the team holds a significant margin heading into round four, Gisli Sveinbergsson is in a tight race for the individual crown. He is currently in second at 7-under par 209 and trails the leader, Patrick Flavin of Miami, by two strokes. Sveinbergsson shot a 1-under par 71 in round three.
Two other Flashes are in the top 10, with Chase Johnson in a tie for fifth overall. Johnson had his best round of the tournament Saturday at 2-under par 70, bringing his overall score to 1-under par 215. Fellow junior Ian Holt is tied for ninth at 3-over par 219. Holt shot 4-over par Saturday at 76.
Bjarki Petursson is tied for 16th overall at 8-over par 224. The defending MAC Player of the Week shot a 75 on Saturday to stay in the top 20. Senior Josh Whalen rounded out the lineup in a tie for 20th at 9-over par 225. After a rough start with on Friday, Whalen had the top round on the team Saturday to move up 14 spots. He shot a 3-under par 69 with four birdies.
