Among 13 teams, Kent State boasted the second most players selected to the 2015 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Football Team. Fourteen Golden Flashes were recognized by the conference office Tuesday for their efforts on the field and in the classroom.
Seniors Jordan Italiano (Canfield, Ohio) and Matt Dellinger (Clarkston, Mich.) were among nine conference players to become three-time Academic All-MAC selections. Juniors Nick Cuthbert (Chesterland, Ohio) and Nate Holley (Toledo, Ohio) and senior Chad Bushley (Berea, Ohio) were repeat selections.
Making first-time appearances on the academic all-conference team were: James Alexander (Miami, Fla.) Connor Arlia (Weirton, W. Va.), Matt Bahr (Kenton, Ohio), George Bollas (Aurora, Ohio), Marcus Elliott (Toledo, Ohio), Luke Grandjean (North Canton, Ohio), Shane Hynes (Clarkston, Mich.), Sam Kukura (Kirtland, Ohio) and Matt Sommers (Kent, Ohio).
To be eligible for the academic accolade, student-athletes must be in at least their second year of school, carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher and participate in 50 percent of the team's games that season.
Several of the 14 Flashes are piling up multiple awards this season. Dellinger and Holley were each named to the all-conference team earlier this month. Italiano and Cuthbert have claimed an array of honors, including spots on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team.Â
Next week, a select group of Academic All-MAC honorees will be named MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes.
