Flashes to Compete at Lock Haven and Midlands

Stepping out of dual meet competition, Kent State (5-2, 1-1 MAC) will split its squad up for a pair of tournaments on Tuesday. Four Golden Flashes will compete in the Midlands Championships Tuesday and Wednesday at Northwestern, while 15 Flashes are slated to compete in the one-day, Lock Haven Classic on Tuesday.
Kent State is No. 16 in the latest InterMat Tournament Rankings and No. 20 in W.I.N.'s Tournament Power Rankings.
The Competition
Host Lock Haven will be joined by Binghamton, Bucknell, Clarion, George Mason, Hofstra, No. 22 Indiana, Kent State and Messiah. Weight classes can include multiple entrants among the nine full teams and other partial squads. Team scores will be determined by its top-scoring wrestler at each weight. Several Flashes will compete unattached.
The 53rd Ken Kraft Midlands Championships is among the toughest tournaments in the nation. Welsh-Ryan Arena will host many of the nation's top wrestlers on 10 mats, beginning Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.

Seniors Sitting Out
Seniors Mack McGuire, Mike DePalma and Ian Miller will all be held out of action this week, but are expected back in the lineup in January.

Quick Shots
•   Mack McGuire, Kyle Conel and Ian Miller are all undefeated in dual meets.
•   Casey Sparkman earned his first career MAC dual victory against Missouri, while Kyle Conel and Stephen Suglio both earned their first against Buffalo.
•   Redshirt freshman Devin Nye won a 285-pound title at the Cleveland State Open. Four other Flashes placed in the Top three.
•   Ian Miller has won 157-pound titles at both the Navy Classic and Las Vegas Invitational. He was named MAC Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 25. He is No. 2 in every major poll. Â
•   Miller recorded his 35th career pin at Navy, which ranks fourth among Kent State's career leaders. He also recently passed Nic Bedelyon for eighth place in career victories, now with 117.
•   Mack McGuire upped his career win total to 98 against Missouri.
•   Following the Eastern Michigan Duals, Mike DePalma was named MAC Wrestler of the Week for a 3-0 day with a 4-3 upset of No. 4 Bryant Clagon of Rider.
•   Kent State's seven straight years with at least one All-American is the 11th longest active streak in the nation.
Up Next
Kent State will head to Hampton, Va., Jan. 8-9 to compete in the Virginia Duals. Twelve teams will vie for a team title in the dual tournament.
