LEXINGTON, Ky. โ Kent State libero Challen Geraghty added to an impressive list of accolades on Tuesday, as the sophomore from Louisville, Ky. was named AVCA All-Northeast Region Honorable Mention.
The Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year led the conference with 5.74 digs per set and 600 digs, which rank 6th and 10th in the country, respectively.ย Both marks are second on Kent State's single-season records list. Geraghty matched her career-high with 39 digs, which is the fourth-most in program history, to help the Golden Flashes capture a 3-1 victory at Ohio on November 5. Her 39 digs were the second-most in the country by a player in a four-set match this season.
During the Flashes' match at Western Michigan on October 24, Geraghty became the fastest player in school history to reach 1,000 digs, as she accomplished the milestone in just 209 sets. She currently ranks sixth in Kent State history with 1,211 digs and is one of only two players to post multiple 500-dig seasons. Her 5.09 digs per set average currently ranks second all-time.
In addition to AVCA All-Region honors, Geraghty was named All-MAC First Team, a three-time MAC East Defensive Player of the Week recipient and the Top Libero at the Golden Flashes Classic. She was a member of the MAC All-Freshman Team a season ago.
Geraghty joins Danielle Holt as the only Golden Flashes to earn AVCA All-Region honors. Holt was an All-Mideast Region Honorable Mention selection during her sophomore campaign in 2003.
The play of Geraghty was a huge factor in a record-setting season for Kent State. The Flashes won a share of the MAC East Division championship for the first time in school history by winning a record 13 conference matches. Kent State earned the No. 3 seed in the MAC Volleyball Championship, which is the highest seed in program history, and advanced to the tournament semifinals for the first time since 2007. The Flashes finished in the Top 100 of the RPI rankings at No. 97 for the first time since the 2007 season.
