
Flashes Break 4x200m Record at Drake Relays; Ashland Open, Gina Relays and Kip Janvrin Update

Kent State's men's track and field split up this weekend as they compete at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, the Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola, Iowa, the Hillsdale College Gina Relays in Hillsdale Michigan and the Ashland Alumni Open in Ashland, Ohio.
Drake Relays
DES MOINES, Iowa – Kent State competed in good competition on Friday at the 106th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
Starting off the relays for the Golden Flashes on Friday was William Barnes in the 110m hurdles. Barnes ran a time of 14.19 in the preliminaries as he qualified for the finals tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, April 25th.
Kyle Tywon joined Barnes in the 110m hurdles as he ran a time of 14.66, just missing Saturday's finals.
Jesse Oxley competed in the pole vault university/college division and tied for seventh. Oxley had a best height of 4.92m (16' 1.75") on the day.
Barnes teamed up with Matthew Tobin, Miles Dunlap and Andrew O'Leary to run the 4x200m relay as the fourth athletes took down a school record. The previous school record was 1:25.20 set in 1984 by Jefferson, Graham, Starks and Jones. Tobin, Dunlap, O'Leary and Barnes ran a time of 1:24.61 for a sixth place finish.Â
Ashland Open
ASHLAND, Ohio – Kent State's throwers headed to the Ashland University this weekend to compete in the Ashland Alumni Open, in which Matthias Tayala turned in a great performance in the hammer throw invitational section.
Matthias Tayala walked away with a third place finish but was the first collegiate athlete. Tayala had a best mark of 70.27m (230' 6") on the day. He finish third behind AG Kruger (NIKE), who took first at 75.54m (247' 10"), and Alexander Ziegler, who took second at 74.71m (245' 1").
Kip Janvrin Open
INDIANOLA, Iowa – Kent State had one male compete at the Kip Janvrin Open on Friday as Kyle Schlumbohm competed in the pole vault competition.
Schlumbohm took first place in the pole vault with a height of 4.75m (15' 7").
Hillsdale GINA Relays
HILLSDALE, Michigan – The Golden Flashes started off the GINA Relays on Thursday, April 23rd and continued on Friday, April 24th.
Kent State had one athlete run Thursday night in Connor Whelan, who ran a time of 16:04.82 in the 5000m Open. Whelan's time put him in 72nd place in the race as it was his personal-best time, both indoors and outdoors.
The Golden Flashes continue the Drake Relays and the Gina Relays tomorrow, Saturday, April 25th.Â
