CLEVELAND – Kent State's Kyle Conel (Ashtabula, Ohio) was given two honors by the Mid-American Conference on Wednesday, after going 4-0 at the Virginia Duals this past weekend. Conel was named Wrestler of the Week and Male Scholar Athlete of the Week.
Helping the Golden Flashes finish 3-1 at the Virginia Duals, Conel was the only Kent State wrestler to go 4-0. His last two victories clinched dual meet wins for the Flashes along with a Silver Bracket title. Conel topped Austin Coburn 6-2, in Kent State's 23-13 victory over No. 24 Old Dominion in the Silver Bracket finals. He also helped the Flashes pull away in their 22-17 semifinal win over Bucknell with a 4-2 win over Rory Bonner.
Conel's weekend started with a 17-2 technical fall over George Mason's Cameron Houston. He followed that with a 3-2 decision over Iowa State's Marcus Harrington.
The redshirt freshman is on an eight-match winning streak and is 10-0 in dual meets this year, helping the Flashes to an 8-3 mark. On Dec. 29, Conel won a 197-pound championship at the Lock Haven Classic.
In the classroom, Conel carries a 3.5 grade point average as a computer science major. He becomes Kent State wrestling's second MAC Male Scholar Athlete after Tyler Buckwalter (Mill Hall, Pa.) claimed the honor in November.
Now 17-5, Conel has three pins, three tech falls and a major decision on the season. He joins Ian Miller (Oak Harbor) and Mike DePalma (Jeannette, Pa.) as the third Kent State student-athlete to be named MAC Wrestler of the Week.
The Golden Flashes face a pair of road tests this weekend against archrival No. 21 Ohio on Friday and Eastern Michigan Sunday.Â
