Gymnastics Heads to Kalamazoo to take on the Broncos

Kent, Ohio – The Kent State gymnastics team heads to Kalamazoo, Mich., this Sunday to take on the Western Michigan Broncos at 1 p.m. at University Arena inside Reed Fieldhouse. This will be the first Mid-American Conference contest of the season for the Golden Flashes, who are looking to defend their MAC Championship from last season. This weekend's meet against the Broncos will be streamed live on ESPN3.
Kent State
The Golden Flashes (1-1, 0-0 MAC) are coming off a 194.100-193.500 loss to Utah State on January 15. Sophomore Rachel Stypinski and junior Jordan Hardison captured victories for the Golden Flashes as Stypinski posted a 9.850 on beam and Hardison earned a 9.825 on bars.
The Golden Flashes turned in a team score of 48.450 on beam, improving upon their previous season-high of 48.250. The Flashes also turned in scores of 48.250 on vault, 47.900 on bars, and 48.900 on floor exercise.  Â
Western Michigan
The Broncos (3-0, 2-0 MAC) last competed on Jan. 17 in a tri-meet with Bowling Green and Eastern Michigan. As a team, WMU scored 195.275 to defeat both EMU and BGSU who scored 195.050 and 193.575, respectively.Â
Western posted scores of 48.650 (vault), 48.825 (bars), 49.100 (beam), and 48.700 (floor).
The Broncos were scheduled to take on West Virginia in Morgantown on Jan. 24, but the meet was cancelled due to dangerous weather conditions.
The Match-Up
Kent State holds a 54-20 all-time lead in competitions against Western Michigan, with last year's regular season dual resulting in a 194.900-193.325 victory for the Golden Flashes. The Flashes totaled 48.700 on vault, 48.625 on bars, 48.600 on beam, and 48.975 on floor, bringing their final score to 194.900.
The Broncos totaled 48.500 on vault, 48.000 on bars, 48.600 on beam, and 48.225 on floor, bringing their final score to 193.325.
With a score of 9.875 on both beam and floor, Stypinski secured two victories for Kent, while Rebecca Osmer finished atop the uneven bars standings with a score of 9.800.Â
