AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 13 Kent State women's golf team took its second straight title at the University of Texas Golf Club, winning the 2016 Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at two-under par 862 (282-296-284).
The Golden Flashes were four-under par Tuesday, surpassing No. 12 Miami by one stroke and fending off the hosts, No. 20 Texas, by four strokes. The rest of the field finished the tournament at 13-over par or higher.
"We were so proud of the way they all competed this week," said head coach Greg Robertson. "They played hard until the end, never gave up, and made some birdies on the last few holes to come out on top by a shot. Michaela and Pim just played exceptionally well throughout the tournament. This is a young team, but they've grown up quite a bit in the last month and a half. It's certainly a great way to end the fall."
Kent State picked up the tournament title with two top-five finishes and all four scoring golfers in the top 25. Michaela Finn led the way with a second place finish at seven-under par 209. Finn was two-under par on Tuesday, solidifying her third straight round under par.
Pimnipa Panthong was a stroke behind Finn at six-under par 210, good for third place. Panthong shot four-under par in round three, a team-best over the final 18 holes. Panthong has finished in the top-three in three of her first four collegiate tournaments.
Freshman Marissa Kirkwood and senior Wad Phaewchimplee each finished in a tie for 25th at nine-over par 225. Phaewchimplee shot two-over par Tuesday, while Krikwood carded four-over in round three. Karoline Stormo capped off her squad in a tie for 54th at 14-over par. She had her best round of the week Tuesday with an even-par 72.
The Golden Flashes improve their fall record to 8-4-1 against top-25 nationally ranked teams. The travel fall road schedule has finished for the fall, but the team will compete one more time locally at the Silver Lake Shootout Oct. 24.
