KENT, Ohio- Three Golden Flashes went 2-0 Tuesday night as Kent State went 1-1 in front of a huge M.A.C. Center crowd during the Thanksgiving Throwdown. The Flashes pummeled Cleveland State 40-3, with its only setback coming in overtime and fell to No. 4 Ohio State 36-13.
Sophomores Anthony Tutolo (133), Casey Sparkman (157) and Jairod James (174) each earned a pair of victories in their first dual action of the season. Tutolo improved to 10-0 on the year with a pair of major decisions.
Sparkman and James each overcame deficits against Ohio State. Trailing Jake Ryan 3-1 after two periods, Sparkman started the third with an escape and scored a pair of takedowns, including one at the edge of the mat with two seconds remaining, to claim a 6-4 victory.
James trailed Ohio State's Seth Williams 5-2 in the second period and 8-7 in the third. An escape by James and shot by Williams with less than a minute remaining led to a cradle and pin, the third of the season for James.
The Flashes also got pins from sophomore Devin Nye (285) and junior Jerald Spohn (184) against the Vikings.
Sophomore Isaac Bast (165) and true freshman Cory Simpson (125) each earned their first career dual victory against Cleveland State. Simpson broke a third period 5-5 tie with a lateral drop to go ahead for good.
Also grabbing wins for Kent State were juniors Chance Driscoll (141) and Stephen Suglio (197).
During a break in the action, Ohio State's Kyle Snyder was recognized for being the youngest Olympic gold medalist in the history of United States Wrestling.
The Golden Flashes return to action Dec. 2-3 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
