Kent State linebacker Nick Cuthbert (Chesterland, Ohio) was selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 5 Team Thursday and will go on the 2016 Academic All-America ballot. Now a graduate student, Cuthbert becomes a three-time Academic All-District selection.
Earning a bachelor's degree last December as a criminal justice major, Cuthbert carried a 3.97 grade point average, receiving just one B in his 3.5-year undergraduate career.
A senior on the field, Cuthbert ranks third on the team in tackles with 42. He has 4.0 tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery. In a win last week at Central Michigan, he jarred a ball loose that was intercepted by teammate Kevin Bourne.
On pace to complete graduate school in May of 2017, the 2016 Academic All-American was also recently named a Campbell Trophy semifinalist, recognizing the best football scholar-athlete in the nation.
In two straight seasons, Cuthbert has been a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, awarded to the best college football player to start their career as a walk-on. He was also among 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award and a nominee for the Wuerffel Trophy and the AFCA Good Works Team.
Last December, Cuthbert earned the George Eastman Outstanding Criminology and Justice Studies Undergraduate Student Award. He is also a two-time recipient of the team's Leo Strang Award for academic achievement.
In addition, Cuthbert is a two-time MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete and Academic All-Mid-American Conference selection.
The Golden Flashes return to action Tuesday night, hosting No. 17 Western MIchigan at Dix Stadium on ESPN2.
