Cuthbert Named to Academic All-America First Team

Kent State senior Nick Cuthbert (Chesterland, Ohio/West Geauga) was among three linebackers selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team Thursday. A graduate student, Cuthbert carried a 3.97 grade point average, receiving just one B in his 3.5-year undergraduate career.
The former walk-on went out with a bang, recording 56 tackles in his final three games (18.7 tpg). Now a two-time Academic All-America selection, Cuthbert ranks ninth in MAC with 98 tackles. He finished second on the team in both solo tackles (52) and tackles for loss (8.5).
The Golden Flashes are among elite company with at least one Academic All-America selection in four consecutive years and a first team choice in three straight years.
On Wednesday, Cuthbert was named Mid-American Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Week for his Senior Day performance against Northern Illinois. In the final game of his college career, he made 19 tackles, helping hold the Huskies to 3.0 yards per carry.
Cuthbert was among 13 repeat selections on this year's CoSIDA Academic All-America Team. He is also a three-time Academic All-District Team selection and looks to become a three-time MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete later this year. Cuthbert was a semifinalist for the Campbell Trophy and was on watch lists for the Burlsworth Trophy, the Senior CLASS Award, the Wuerffel Trophy and the AFCA Good Works Team.
Last December, Cuthbert earned the George Eastman Outstanding Criminology and Justice Studies Undergraduate Student Award. He is also a two-time recipient of the team's Leo Strang Award for academic achievement.
Earning a bachelor's degree last December as a criminal justice major, Cuthbert is on pace to earn his master's degree this May in criminology/sociology.
