Baseball Program Spreads Holiday Cheer in Local Community

As the fall semester was winding down and students were preparing for finals, Kent State baseball spent time in the local community giving back so others could have a happier holiday.
Members of the team kept up the annual tradition of volunteering at the King Kennedy Community Center in Ravenna for the organization's peace basket program. The center receives donations of various items and volunteers help assemble holiday baskets to be given out to less fortunate members of the community. More than 125 baskets are distributed every year, and the team has now participated in the program for five years.
The baseball program unselfishly gave in other ways, too.  The team gathered together clothing items – enough to fill twenty bags – and brought them to a homeless shelter in Akron. Everything from clothing to hats to shoes was donated from the student-athletes' and coaches' closets to go to the less fortunate. Once the items were brought to the shelter, team members spent time organizing and passing out items, while also spending time talking with those who stopped by to pick up items.
"It is a great experience to be able to give back, especially around the holidays," said Dylan Rosa. "To be able to help those who are less fortunate than we are really means a lot to us. We always enjoy being out in the community."
After winter break ends, the team will begin preparing for the 2017 season that is set to begin February 17 at Belmont.
