Kent State sophomore 133-pounder Anthony Tutolo came away with a sixth place at the 35th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Saturday. Tutolo won his first two matches of the day to make his way into the consolation semifinals.
Capturing the biggest victory of his career in his first match of the day, Tutolo topped two-time All-American Earl Hall (Iowa State) 9-8. Ranked as high as No. 4 in national polls and the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Hall jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one period. Tutolo closed the gap to 6-3 with a takedown late in the second period. He then put Hall on his back twice in the third period and hung on for the one point victory.
"Anthony just kept chipping away," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said of the deficit. "We knew he was wearing him down and he finally got to him in the third."
Tutolo went 4-3 on the tournament, including a 10-3 victory over Arizona State's Ali Naser on Saturday.
As a team, the Golden Flashes finished in 25th place.
"We need to get better every day," Andrassy said. "We've got a lot of young talent. Guys need to keep putting themselves in better positions on the mat and it needs become an instinct. Hopefully experiences like this tournament are going to help with that."
Kent State opens up Mid-American Conference competition Sunday, Dec. 11, at Buffalo.
