MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Kent State (0-2) was unable to match two early tallies from Old Dominion (2-0) on Saturday, falling 2-0 in the second game of the young season.
The Monarchs struck in the opening frame on an RBI single after a fielder's choice and stolen base placed a runner in scoring position. They brought another run in during the following inning after a walk, stolen base and error put runners on the corners, setting up a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 game.
Things went pretty silently from that point on, until the Golden Flashes looked to try another comeback in the 9th. Josh Hollander hit a two-out single, his second collegiate hit in as many at-bats, and Dom Iero followed with another base hit to put runners on the corners. But, the runners were left on to end the game, as Kent State went 1-for-13 with runners on base and 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position on the day.
Eli Kraus went 5.0 innings in the start with two runs (one earned), four hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Connor Wollersheim threw 2.2 shutout innings in his debut with one hit and two walks. Zach Spangler got the final out with a strikeout.
The Golden Flashes outhit the Monarchs 7-6 with seven singles sprinkled throughout the lineup. They will take on No. 10 North Carolina State on Sunday in an 11 a.m. game to conclude the Caravelle Resort Tournament.
