LAFAYETTE, La. – The Kent State University men's golf team begins the spring season Feb. 29-March 1 at the 31st annual Louisiana Classics. The 54-hole tournament will begin with 36 holes on Monday followed by 18 on Tuesday at the par-72, 7,098-yard Oakbourne Country Club.
Live scoring of the tournament can be found on golfstat.com and there will be FREE video streaming on the ninth hole starting at 9 a.m. on both Monday and Tuesday.
The 12-team field comprises of No. 1 Illinois, Illinois State, No. 49 Kansas, Louisiana, Middle Tennessee State, Southeastern La., Southern Miss, Texas State, UTSA, UT Arlington, No. 39 Texas A&M and the No. 58 Golden Flashes.
Making the starting lineup for Kent State are juniors Josh Whalen (Napanee, Ontario) and Tyler McHugh (Aurora, Ohio), sophomores Chase Johnson (Barberton, Ohio) and Ian Holt (Stow, Ohio) and freshman Gisli Sveinbergsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland). Also, lone senior Sebastian Bendsen (Vejen, Denmark) and freshman Bjarki Petursson (Borgarnes, Iceland) will be competing as individuals.
Kent State is coming off a fall season that was highlighted by a third place finish in its season-opener at the highly competitive Gopher Invitational, and winning a team title at the Cleveland State Invitational.
Holt, who has a career scoring average of 74.18, led Kent State with a 10th place finish at the Gopher Invitational at 6-over 219. Johnson, who averages 73.84, finished just one stroke back of Holt with a 7-over 220 for 14th place.
The Golden Flashes dominated the Cleveland State Invitational, finishing 20 strokes ahead of second-place finisher Oakland at 17-under 847. Both Holt and Johnson tied for second place at 6-under 210.
Last season, the Golden Flashes finished in fourth place at the Louisiana Classics and were led by Whalen's 12th place finish in the individual standings. Whalen, who was just two strokes out of the Top-10, combined for 13 birdies and finished the tournament 2-over par. He earned Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week for his performance. The Golden Flashes tallied a team score of 12-over 876, finishing behind No.1 Illinois (-19), Texas State (+3) and Louisiana (+9).
