Part of the Kent State track and field team will be in action this weekend, as the throwers and distance runners head to Athens, Ohio for the Ohio Cherry Blossom Invitational on Saturday, April 2nd. Action from Ohio University is set to begin at 11:30am with the women's shot put.
The Golden Flashes spent last weekend at the Yellow Jacket Relays in Atlanta, Ga., where the men's 4x100m relay team consisting of William Barnes, Jonathan Grant, Brian Smith, and Wayne Gordon stole the show. With a time of 39.74, the Flashes took 1st place, defeating several of the premier sprint schools in the country in Georgia, Auburn, South Carolina, and Clemson. Their time of 39.74 is the 2nd-fastest time in Kent State history and the 7th-fastest in the country this season.
Senior Rachel Slingluff also brought home some hardware, taking 1st in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:56.83, which moves her into 5th place in program history. Junior Caroline Sauers joined Slingluff in the steeplechase record book, running a 11:14.39, putting her 9th all-time.
Three other Golden Flashes left Atlanta with victories. Jesse Oxley in the pole vault (16' 8"), Reggie Jagers in the discus (181' 6"), and Jacob Swords in the 800m (1:50.62), all found themselves on top of the podium on the second day of the event.
Senior Roseanne Erickson was named the MAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for her efforts in the long jump at the Yellow Jacket Relays. Erickson took 4th place with a mark of 6.1m (20' 0.25"), which currently ranks 1st in the MAC and T-11th in the East Qualifying Regional.
A total of 22 athletes will compete for the Golden Flashes in 11 events at the Ohio Cherry Blossom Invitational this Saturday.
The Golden Flashes will split up and attend two events next weekend, as part of the team will return to Ohio University for the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships and others will travel to Western Kentucky for the Hilltopper Relays.
