KENT, Ohio — Kent State men's basketball head coach Rob Senderoff announced another addition for the 2016-17 season with the signing of Kevin Zabo (Indian Hills C.C.) to a National Letter of Intent on Friday (April 15).
Zabo is the fourth player the Golden Flashes have added during the spring signing period and the third who has previously spent time at a NCAA Division I program. The 6'2" point guard played his freshman season at San Diego State before transferring to Indian Hills Community College this past year, where he was a teammate of fellow signee Jerrelle DeBerry.
"We are excited to welcome Kevin to the Kent State family," Senderoff said. "We knew we needed to sign a point guard here in the spring with Kellon Thomas deciding to transfer, and we are fortunate to be able to add a player of Kevin's caliber. He is an experienced point guard and really looks to create for his teammates. Kevin comes from great programs, most recently Indian Hills Community College. He started his college career at San Diego State and was part of a NCAA Tournament team that was ranked for most of the season. Prior to that, he played for Brewster Academy, which is one of top prep schools in the country."
Zabo helped Indian Hills capture the regular season and postseason regional championships and finish with a 29-5 record following a first round loss in the NJCAA National Tournament this past season. He averaged 7.0 points and 4.3 assists per game with a 2.76 assist-to-turnover ratio.
As a freshman at San Diego State in 2014-15, Zabo played in 16 games for the Aztecs, who lost to eventual national champion Duke in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. He played in 12 of SDSU's first 13 games and averaged 13.4 minutes and 3.5 points per game before being sidelined with an injury and seeing just 14 minutes of court time the rest of the season.
With the addition of Zabo, Kent State will have six newcomers on next year's roster in addition to three players who redshirted this past season.
"We will have a large number of newcomers, but we are excited about what we have added to the program," Senderoff said. "It has been a busy spring, and we can't wait to bring our new players in and begin blending them with our returnees for another exciting year of Kent State basketball."
