For the second straight week, Kent State has swept the Mid-American Conference weekly awards. Pete Schuler was named the East Division Player of the Week while Eric Lauer was named the East Division Pitcher of the Week as both helped the Flashes go 4-0, including a series sweep at Ohio.
Schuler had a big week at the plate as the freshman earned the first honors of his young career. He started the week off by going 3-for-4 against Penn State with a double and two runs scored. He caught the first game of the DH with Ohio, a 6-0 shutout. He got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning then hit the first homerun of his career in the 4th, a two-run blast to center field. After having the second game on Saturday off, he stayed hot on Sunday to help the Flashes take a series sweep. He went 2-for-4 including another homerun in the 2nd inning. The freshman now has a batting average over .300 on the season.
Lauer was lauded by the MAC for the fourth time this season. He threw another shutout in 6.2 innings for the win against Ohio on Saturday. The junior allowed just four hits and two walks with six strikeouts. He dropped his season ERA from 0.90 to 0.81 in the effort and has a conference ERA of 0.26 in five starts. Lauer has now allowed just one earned run through his last seven starts.
The team will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Penn State for a 6:30 p.m. game.
