Women's basketball Head Coach Todd Starkey has announced his first hire as Patrick Mashuda has been named an assistant coach for the Golden Flashes.
Mashuda joins Kent State after twelve seasons as the head coach at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, where he also served as an associate athletic director. He led the team to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament, the first ever appearance in school history, and the program's first-ever 20-win season in 2015-16 as the Hawks finished 20-9.
"We are very fortunate to attract someone with Coach Mashuda's qualifications to join our staff at Kent State," said Starkey. "He brings a wealth of experience and will prove to be a great asset for the program."
A six-time conference Coach of the Week recipient, Mashuda took Chowan to two semifinal appearances in the conference tournament. In addition, the team tied for first place in the division as a second-year member in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The program also had one of the largest comeback wins in CIAA Tournament history (19 points) under his guidance.
Mashuda has recruited and developed eight all-conference selections, three rookies of the year and six rookie team members. He also understands the importance of the off-the-court aspects of the game, as his program has logged more than 100 hours of community service every year. As associate athletic director, he was responsible for the department's NCAA compliance expectations, serving a big role in the school's transition from Division III to Division II.
Currently president of the CIAA Women's Basketball Coaches Association, Mashuda also served as the Division II Conference Captain and a three-year member of the Division II Regional Advisory Committee (RAC). He also served as chair of the staff Annual Giving Fund at Chowan and speaker for the Chowan University Outreach Program, while he also attended the NCAA/CIAA Action Academy and the NCAA Leadership Academy, among numerous other service experiences.
The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native received an associate degree from Butler Community College before receiving a bachelor's degree in management from Robert Morris in 1992. Mashuda then went on to earn a master's degree in sport management from Slippery Rock in 2005.
