KOHLER, Wis. –Kent State's 2015-16 season came to an end Wednesday during the final round of the Kohler NCAA Regional. Sophomore Ian Holt (Stow, Ohio) led the way for the Golden Flashes at the Meadow Valleys Course at Blackwolf Run, with a 3-under 69 in his final round and a 3-under 213 for the tournament.
Holt finished in a tie for fifth place after notching four birdies Wednesday. Only one player not on the top five teams finished ahead of him to earn the individual bid at the NCAA Championships.
"Ian has some serious speed in his golf swing and he drove the ball exceptionally well this tournament," Head Coach Herb Page said. "His last four weeks of the season were phenomenal. Ian keeps getting better and I'm really proud of him."
The Flashes shot a 5-over 293 Wednesday, improving on their round two performance by seven strokes. However, Kent State had to settle for a 12th place tournament finish with a 17-over 881.
Junior Josh Whalen (Napanee, Ontario) had a solid round three with an even par 72. Whalen had three birdies Wednesday, including one on his final hole. He finished tied for 38th place at 4-over.
Sophomore Chase Johnson (Barberton, Ohio) had back-to-back birdies on holes 1 & 2, but a pair of double bogeys led to a 4-over 76 in round three and 6-over total for the tournament.
Freshmen Gisli Sveinbergsson (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland) and Bjarki Petursson (Borgarnes, Iceland) each birdied the par five 11th hole to start their day at 1-under. Both went 4-over on the round.
"We have a very high standard at Kent State that these young men want to live up to," Page said. "In some ways we didn't reach those standards, but in other ways, we made some big, big strides."
Illinois won the team title with an 11-under, highlighted by Wednesday's 7-under performance. Ohio State's Tee-k Kelly, who competed as an individual, captured medalist honors with a 7-under 209.
"These guys can't wait to get back next year," Page said. "They are golf rats with a tremendous work ethic and a great passion for the game. They are all very coachable and it was the first regional for four of our five guys. And I can't wait for next for next season either."
