Eric Lauer was named a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association First Team All-American while he and Zarley Zalewski were named American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings First Team All-Region honorees on Wednesday.
The accolades put Lauer one step closer to being the second consensus First Team All-American in Kent State history as he has already been named such by Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America. He was also named a finalist for the coveted Dick Howser Award and a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist. Lauer adds being a finalist for the National College Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher of the Year honor to his long list of awards while he was named the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year earlier this month. His 0.69 ERA this season with the lowest for a Division-I starter since 1979.
Zalewski receives All-Region honors for the third time in his remarkable career. He was also a First Team All-Region recipient as a sophomore while he was named to the Second Team in 2015, his junior year. The switch-hitter was a First Team All-MAC honoree for the third straight season. Zalewski batted .349 as a senior, nearly matching his four-year career mark, with 19 doubles, one triple, five homeruns and 58 RBI.
Both are now in the running for the ABCA/Rawlings All-America team that is set to be announced on Saturday.
