Kent State's Nick Cuthbert (Chesterland, Ohio) and Antwan Dixon (Fort Myers, Fla.) were among 88 FBS players named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List this week. Cuthbert was also tabbed as a nominee for the 2016 All-State American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.
A fifth-year senior on the field, Cuthbert earned a bachelor's degree in December and began graduate school in January. He earned CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team honors last year and has transitioned from safety to linebacker this offseason. Cuthbert has also been committed to community service in the area.
The Golden Flashes' biggest proponent of community service has been Dixon, who volunteers at every opportunity he gets, especially with area youth. The sophomore wide receiver became a big-play threat last season, totaling 536 all-purpose yards.
The duo was among five Mid-American Conference players on the watch list, while Cuthbert was among six MAC nominees for the Good Works Team.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually by the All Sports Association in Fort Walton Beach Florida. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 3, and finalists will be announced on Nov. 23. A formal announcement of the winner will be on Dec. 6 at the National Football Foundation's press conference in New York City. The presentation of the trophy will occur at the 48th Annual All Sports Association Awards Banquet on Feb. 10, 2016, in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
The select group of student-athletes nominated for the Good Works Team balance academics and athletics, while remaining committed to helping others and bettering their communities. Comprised of 12 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 12 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA, the final roster of 24 award recipients will be unveiled in September.
Kent State opens its season Sept. 3 at Penn State. The Golden Flashes host their first of six home games Sept. 10, against North Carolina A&T State. Season tickets, Family Season 4-Packs and 3-Game Mini Plans are on sale now.
