
Men's Golf in Fourth After Two Rounds of Gopher Invite

KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University men's golf team is in solid position heading into the final round of the Gopher Invitational, hosted by Minnesota, at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minnesota. Through two rounds, the Golden Flashes are tied for fourth, with an overall score of eight-over par 576 (286-290).
The Golden Flashes will be in contention Sunday, trailing the overall leaders San Diego State by five strokes. Kent State is holding its own in a loaded field that includes four top-25 teams and several in the top-50. The Golden Flashes currently lead two of the top-25 teams in the field. Kent State was consistent from top to bottom and are the only team with all five golfers in the top-35 individually.
Leading the Flashes are Gisli Sveinbergsson and Josh Whalen, who enter each the final day two-over par at 144 and tied for 16th. Sveinbergsson shot a 74 to start the day and finished one-under par at 70 in the second round. Whalen had the best first round of anyone at the Gopher Invite, scoring a three-under par 68. He carded a 76 in the second round to stay in the mix on Sunday.
One stroke behind the two team leaders is Ian Holt, the top Golden Flash from last year's Gopher Invitational. Holt finished three-over par at 145 to tie for 24th. He was consistent over his 36 holes Saturday, carding a 72 in the first round and a 73 in the second.
Fourth among the Golden Flashes was Chase Johnson at four-over par 146, tying for 27th. He carded a 72 in the first round and a 74 in the second. He gave his team a boost on the back nine of the second round, with three birdies down the stretch. In his collegiate debut, Chris Doody wrapped up the field for Kent State with his team's fifth solid performance. He shot five-over par 147, with a 74 in the first round and a 73 in the second. Doody ended his day tied for 34th.
