KENT, Ohio – The Kent State University field hockey team (4-3) faced its second nationally ranked opponent in as many weeks, falling to No. 19 Iowa (5-1) Sunday, 2-0.
The first half was a tight battle that ended scoreless. Much of the match was played in the midfield, and neither team had an abundance of chances. However, the Golden Flashes were the more active team offensively, outshooting the nationally ranked opponent, 4-3.
In the 44th minute, Iowa scored the opening goal of the match on a shot from Makenna Grewe just seconds after a corner. Kent State looked to answer back, with two shots over the next five minutes. However, Iowa put another goal on the scoreboard seven minutes after their first, provided by Isabella Solaroli.
The Golden Flashes kept the pressure up and played with urgency down the stretch. They outshot the road team, 6-2, over the final 20 minutes but did not cut into the Iowa lead.
In the end, the shot output was an even 12 for each team, with Iowa securing one more shot on target then Kent State.
