KENT, Ohio – For the second straight game, Kent State was evenly matched on the turf with a top ranked team; unfortunately, No. 15 Northwestern was able to make more of its opportunities count as the Flashes fell 4-1 to the Wildcats on Sunday afternoon.
In the opening half, Kent State attacked strongly, but Northwestern struck first with a goal 6:26 into the game. Despite being down, the Golden Flashes remained composed and strong. They were able to get some great looks on three consecutive penalty corners, but the Wildcats keeper came up with some big saves.
Finally, with twenty seconds remaining in the first half, Silvia Figa Malgosa kept play alive after a corner shot and fed Shannon Talbot who tied the game at one before the teams broke for halftime.
In the second, Northwestern scored quickly again, connecting on a straight shot on a corner play to take a 2-1 lead. That lead grew to 3-1 just before the 47-minute mark before the Wildcats scored their final goal off a shot deflection five minutes later to make it a 4-1 final.
The Golden Flashes dominated the stat line, with 17 shots to the Wildcats' 12 and ten corners to the opposition's six. Ines Delpech led the team with five shots while Talbot had four, half coming on goal. Andrea Rinehart had four saves in net behind a strong performance from the Kent State defense.
Mid-American Conference play is next for Kent State as they will host Ball State on Friday, September 23 in a 2:00 p.m. game at Murphy-Mellis Field.
