The Kent State field hockey program is raising money for cancer research this season, taking in funds to be donated to the Jimmy V Foundation.
Donations will be accepted now through November 5, championship day for the Mid-American Conference Tournament that will be hosted at Murphy-Mellis Field. Fans and supporters can log on to https://commerce.cashnet.com/FHOC to make a contribution.
The team will hold a cancer research game on Sunday, October 2 to bring more awareness to a cause that many students have a personal connection to.
"With my dad passing away from cancer this past summer, I know firsthand how horrible cancer is and what need there is for research," said junior Alison Harmatz. "My teammates have been so supportive, and having the team take part in this cause means a lot to me."
This season, the field hockey team has special stickers on its sticks with the initials "H.H." in honor of Harmatz's father.
The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded by late coach Jim Valvano, who inspired many during his famous ESPY speech saying, "Don't give up…don't ever give up." The organization helps fund research grants and related programs aimed at finding a cure for the disease.
