Geraghty Named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohioย โ Kent State junior liberoย Challen Geraghtyย has been named Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Geraghty displayed her "crazy ability to make plays" by averaging 7.57 digs per set on the opening weekend of Mid-American Conference play. She recorded three sets of double-digit digs in helping the Golden Flashes hold their opponents to a .132 hitting percentage while going 2-0 to start the conference season for the first time since 2008. She was also perfect in 36 service receptions.
In Friday's conference opener against Buffalo, Geraghty led all players with 24 digs. She followed that performance by matching her season-high 29 digs against rival Akron on Saturday. Geraghty made 18 of those digs in the final two sets to lead the way as Kent State's defense held the Zips to a .013 clip following the intermission.
The reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Year is the NCAA Division I active career leader in digs per set (5.19) and ranks second in the country with 5.64 digs per set this season. She has tallied at least 15 digs in each match and hasย recorded 20-plus digs seven times.
Kent State (9-6, 2-0 MAC) hits the road for the second week of MAC play to take on Miami on Friday and Bowling Green on Saturday. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m.
