Flashes Top Citadel to Close Out Virginia Duals

Kent State ended its weekend on a high note with a 26-15 victory over The Citadel Saturday inside Hampton Coliseum. The Golden Flashes took 7-of-10 matches from the Bulldogs in the Bronze Bracket of the Virginia Duals.
The Flashes overcame a 12-0 deficit as junior Chance Driscoll began the comeback with a 7-1 decision over Douglas Gudenburr. Driscoll went 4-0 on the weekend, which included a hard fought 4-3 overtime victory Friday against Campbell's Joshua Heil.
It took until the eighth match for Kent State to take its first lead over The Citadel (17-15) when junior Jerald Spohn secured a 6-0 shutout of Chandler Sambets.
Also recording a shutout during that run was redshirt freshman Jared Walker at 165. Walker earned his first career dual win, blanking Jason Carr 5-0.
Junior Jairod James followed Walker's win with a 17-1 technical fall of Martin Duane. James went 3-1 on the weekend, topping Campbell's Alex Herringshaw 7-4 in his third bout on Friday.
With the team outcome still hanging in the balance (20-15) in the final match, sophomore heavyweight Devin Nye notched his team-leading seventh pin of the season in the second period.
The Flashes' seven wins in the last eight matches included a 7-5 decision from Tim Rooney at 149 and an 11-5 victory from Stephen Suglio at 197. It was Suglio's second straight win at the Virginia Duals after a tech fall win over Campbell's Willie Bievens.
Kent State hosts archrival Ohio in The Grudge Match Sunday, Jan. 22 at the M.A.C. Center.
