INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA has released its annual Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) report, with Kent State athletics continuing its run of success in the classroom.
The Golden Flashes maintained a high academic standard and raised the bar, improving from an 83 percent to 86 percent for the 2010 cohort. . Four different teams at Kent State held a perfect 100 percent, in baseball, field hockey women's golf and gymnastics.
"As our general student population continues to raise the bar academically, our student-athletes are rising to challenge," said Associate Athletics Director for Academic Services Angie Hull. "The graduation rates reported really illustrate this. Along with recruiting high academic-achieving students, we are fortunate to have exceptional academic support services in place to help our student-athletes balance their academics and athletics."
The majority of teams at Kent State did their part by matching or improving their GSR score from the previous season. 12 teams either maintained or improved their GSR score in: baseball, men's track and field, football, men's golf, wrestling, women's basketball, women's track and field, field hockey, women's golf, gymnastics, soccer and softball.
The GSR was developed by the NCAA part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately measure the success of Division I student-athletes. The GSR takes into account the many different academic paths followed by today's college students. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport. By counting incoming transfer students and midyear enrollees, the GSR increases the total number of student-athletes tracked for graduation by approximately 37 percent.
However, Kent State also proved successful in the release of the student-athlete FGR, with a single year improvement from 59 percent to 64 percent. Kent State student-athletes' Four-Class Federal Graduation Rate was 71 percent, as compared to 55 percent for the general student body
