
Kent State Claims 13 Spots on Academic All-MAC Team

Thirteen Kent State student-athletes were named to the 2017 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Football Team Wednesday by the conference office.
Three Golden Flashes became three-time Academic All-MAC selections:
Junior quarterback George Bollas (Aurora, Ohio) 3.66 GPA, Chemistry
Senior linebacker James Alexander (Miami, Fla.) 3.37 GPA (3.68 GPA Grad School), Criminal Justice
Senior safety Marcus Elliott (Toledo, Ohio) 3.34 GPA, Visual Communication Design
Three other Flashes became two-time selections:
Sophomore offensive linemen Chase Van Hoef (Grand Haven, Mich.) 3.40 GPA, Managerial Marketing
Senior defensive end Matthew Sommers (Kent, Ohio) 3.28 GPA, Exercise Science
Junior kicker Shane Hynes (Clarkston, Mich.) 3.26 GPA, Sport Administration
Seven Flashes became first-time selections:
Sophomore punter Derek Adams (Manheim, Pa.) 3.97 GPA, Entrepreneurship
Junior safety John Henry Bronczek (Massillon, Ohio) 3.50 GPA, Business Management
Sophomore wide receiver Trey Harrell (Metaire, La.) 3.28 GPA, General Business
Sophomore long snapper Joey Palumbo (Hudson, Ohio) 3.43 GPA, Sport Administration
Sophomore defensive back Jamal Parker (Pennsauken, N.J.) 3.25 GPA, Sport Administration
Sophomore wide receiver Kavious Price (Bradenton, Fla.) 3.26 GPA, Communications
Senior center Nathan Puthoff (Columbus, Ohio) 3.25 GPA, Computer Information Systems
Adams earned the distinction of being on both the 2017 All-MAC Team and the Academic All-MAC Team.
To be eligible for the academic accolade, student-athletes must be in at least their second year of school, carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher and participate in 50 percent of the team's games that season. A total of 144 football players around the MAC earned academic all-conference honors this season.
A select group of Academic All-MAC honorees will be named MAC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes at a later date.
